- 0–6 months: knit or fleece sleepsuits and simple outfits that are easy to put on.
- 6–12 months: fleece outfits with a sweatshirt or T-shirt, tights and dresses that let them crawl.
- 12–24 months: trousers, dresses and jackets for a baby who's already walking.
Size by height
0–1 month: 50–58 cm · 1–3 months: 59–62 cm · 3–6 months: 63–68 cm · 6–9 months: 69–71 cm · 9–12 months: 72–74 cm · 12–18 months: 75–83 cm · 18–24 months: 83–92 cm. If in doubt, go for the larger size; more details in our size guide.
Layers for every temperature
Several thin layers are better than one thick one: a bodysuit or T-shirt, a fleece outfit and, on top, a knitted cardigan or a padded woven fabric jacket. That way you can add or remove layers as it warms up. For legs and feet, knit or fleece tights keep baby cosy without socks that keep falling off.
How many clothes in each size?
In the early-months sizes, buy only what you need, as babies outgrow them within weeks. From 12 months, growth slows down and it's worth having more pieces in each size.
Frequently asked questions
What clothes does a baby need from 0 to 24 months?
The basics are sleepsuits for the first few months, several fleece or knit outfits for everyday wear, tights or socks, a knit cardigan and a coat or sweatshirt for going out. From their first birthday, add comfy trousers and dresses for when they start walking.
What clothing size is right for a 6-month-old baby?
At 6 months, size 6–9 months is usual, for a length of 69–71 cm. If your baby is 63–68 cm, they'll still wear 3–6 months, though not for long. Measure your baby lying down and, if they're between two sizes, choose the larger one.
Fleece or knit: which fabric is best for a baby?
Both are soft and comfortable; the difference is warmth. Sweatshirt fleece is thicker and warmer, ideal for outfits, sleepsuits and dresses on cold days. Knit is thinner and stretchier, perfect for tights, T-shirts and layering under other clothes.
How many clothes in each size should I buy for a baby?
For sizes 0 to 6 months, buy just a few pieces, as your baby will outgrow them in a matter of weeks. As a rough guide, have enough sleepsuits or outfits to last between washes plus a spare change. From 12 months, it's worth having more pieces in each size.
How should I wash clothes for a baby of a few months?
As a general guide, wash new clothes before first use, inside out, in cold water and don't tumble dry, and follow each garment's care label. Washing inside out protects embroidery and prints, and cold water helps fleece and knit stay soft.
