Swim bottoms, swimsuit or bikini by age
- Swim bottoms: the swim bottoms. The most practical choice while she wears a swim nappy, as they go on and come off in seconds.
- One-piece swimsuit: covers more of the tummy and back and stays put when she crawls or sits in the sand.
- Bikini: best once she is walking confidently and out of nappies.
Size: go by height rather than months
A baby swimsuit should fit snugly around the legs and waist without being tight. Measure her standing up: 63–68 cm is 3-6 months, 72–74 cm is 9-12 months and 75–83 cm is 12-18 months. If she is between two sizes, go for the larger one; the stretch knit adapts.
Details that make a difference
Frills and side ties help stop swim bottoms slipping down. Look for quick-dry styles, flagged on the product page, so she doesn't get cold when she comes out of the water. And remember a swimsuit is no substitute for sun cream or shade in the middle of the day.
One swimsuit or two?
With babies, two is worth it: while one dries after rinsing, the other is ready for the next dip. That way you won't be putting a damp, cold swimsuit on her in the afternoon.
Frequently asked questions
What size swimsuit does a 9 month old baby girl need?
Usually size 9-12 months, which corresponds to a height of 72–74 cm. If your baby is a little taller or wears a bulky swim nappy, go up to 12-18 months (75–83 cm). On the product page you can enter her height and we'll suggest the size. More measurements in the size guide.
Are swim bottoms or a swimsuit better for a baby girl?
In the first year, swim bottoms tend to be more practical as they make swim nappy changes easier. A one-piece swimsuit covers more tummy and back and moves less when she crawls or sits in the sand, so many families use both.
Can a baby girl wear a swim nappy under her swimsuit?
Yes, baby swim bottoms and swimsuits are designed to be worn over a swim nappy. That's why it's worth checking the leg elastic doesn't leave marks; if it's tight with the nappy on, go up a size. Change the nappy when she comes out of the water so she stays comfortable.
How do you wash a baby's swimsuit after the pool?
Rinse it in fresh water as soon as she comes out of the pool or sea to remove chlorine, salt and sand. As a general rule, wash it inside out, cold, without fabric softener and without tumble drying, then dry it in the shade. Always follow the care label so the fabric keeps its stretch and colour.
What to buy a baby girl for her first summer at the beach?
A really useful gift is a swimsuit or swim bottoms with a hooded towel, as they get used every day on holiday. You can choose the towel from our baby girl towels. If you don't know her height, one size up will last all summer.
What baby girl swimsuits does tuc tuc sell?
tuc tuc offers one-piece swimsuits, bikinis and swim bottoms in stretch knit for baby girls, with frills, bows, padded fruit or raised details. Sizes start at 1-3 months, and everything is made in line with the EU REACH regulation, which bans harmful substances in textiles.
