Boys' occasionwear: what he should wear

tuc tuc boys' occasionwear brings together pieces for weddings, First Communions and celebrations: woven fabric or knit blazers with classic lapels, shirts (including one with a detachable bow tie), waistcoats, embroidered polo shirts, trousers and shorts with an elasticated waist. Sizes range from 12 months to 16 years, so the baby and big brother can look just as smart.

From most to least formal

  • Formal: blazer, shirt with bow tie and woven fabric trousers.
  • Smart casual: waistcoat with a shirt and shorts.
  • Relaxed: embroidered polo shirt and shorts, or a knit outfit.

Size by height

3 years = 93–98 cm · 5 years = 105–110 cm · 7 years = 117–122 cm · 10 years = 129–136 cm · 12 years = 137–144 cm. For blazers, if he's between two sizes, choose the larger one so it doesn't pull across the shoulders with a shirt underneath. Check our size guide.

Comfort throughout the celebration

An elasticated or drawstring waist on trousers and shorts lets him move and play without coming undone. A knit blazer is more flexible than a woven fabric one. To care for them, wash inside out, on a cold wash and don't tumble dry, following the care label.

Blazer or waistcoat?

For little ones, a waistcoat or polo shirt is comfier and won't be pulled off after half an hour. A blazer works better from age 5–6 or for very formal ceremonies.

Frequently asked questions

What should a boy wear to a wedding?

For a wedding, the best choice is a blazer with a shirt and woven fabric trousers or shorts; if it's a daytime celebration and warm, a waistcoat with a shirt and shorts is cooler. A shirt with a detachable bow tie adds a formal touch without sacrificing comfort.

What size blazer should I choose for a 6-year-old boy?

A 6-year-old boy usually wears size 6 if he's between 111 and 116 cm tall. If he's close to 116 cm or will wear a thick shirt underneath, choose size 7 (117–122 cm) so there's room in the shoulders and sleeves. Check his height before you buy.

Shorts or long trousers for a boy at a ceremony?

It depends on his age and how formal the event is. Shorts are comfier and cooler, ideal for little ones and daytime celebrations. Long woven fabric trousers look smarter with a blazer. Either way, an elasticated waist means he can move about with ease.

What's the detachable bow tie on the boys' shirt for?

It lets him wear the shirt with a bow tie during the ceremony and take it off afterwards, when he wants to be more comfortable for the meal or the dancing. That way the same shirt also works for other, less formal occasions without the bow tie.

How do I care for a boy's blazer and shirt?

As a general guide, wash inside out, in cold water, on a delicate cycle and don't tumble dry, and always follow the care label. Hang the blazer on a wide hanger so the shoulders don't get marked, and iron the shirt on a medium heat, inside out.

What occasionwear is there for a baby boy?

From size 12 months there are embroidered polo shirts, shorts and trousers with an elasticated waist and knit outfits, comfy for crawling and nappy changes. If you're dressing the whole family, our occasionwear section also has the girls' pieces.
