Newborn cardigans: a layette guide

tuc tuc newborn jackets are knit and denim pieces for your baby's layette: knitted cardigans with raised details, appliqués, embroidered strawberries or flowers, and a denim jacket with an embroidered hood. Sizes from 0-1 month to 18-24 months. Pair them with our newborn sleepsuits and newborn accessories.

Why include a cardigan in the layette

It's the layer you put on and take off depending on the temperature: at home, at the doctor's or out on a walk. Because it opens at the front, there's no need to pull it over your baby's head – something you'll appreciate in the first few weeks.

Knit or denim

  • Knit: soft and warm, for everyday and for coming home from hospital.
  • Denim: more hard-wearing, for when they're going out on more walks, over a bodysuit or sleepsuit.

Which sizes to pack in the layette

A mix is best: one 0-1 month (50–58 cm) for the first few days and another 1-3 months (59–62 cm) or 3-6 months (63–68 cm) for later. That way nothing goes unworn. More measurements in the size guide.

Care

Wash the layette before first wear, on a cold, delicate cycle, and dry knitwear flat. All tuc tuc clothing complies with the European REACH regulation.

For coming home from hospital?

A knitted cardigan over a sleepsuit is the comfiest and prettiest option. Pack it in size 0-1 or 1-3 months depending on the estimated weight, plus a blanket for the journey.

Frequently asked questions

What jacket should a baby wear coming home from hospital?

A knitted cardigan over a sleepsuit or outfit is the usual choice: it's warm, opens at the front and looks lovely in photos. See our newborn outfits too for the complete look. Don't forget a blanket for the journey.

What size cardigan should I pack in the layette?

It's practical to mix sizes: one 0-1 month (50–58 cm) and one 1-3 months (59–62 cm). If you're expecting a big baby, go straight to 1-3 months. On each jacket's product page you can enter the height and we'll suggest the size.

Is a denim jacket comfortable for a baby?

Yes, if it's soft denim and opens at the front. It works well over a bodysuit or sleepsuit for walks in spring and autumn. For the first few days at home, a knitted cardigan is softer. Wash it before first wear.

Should I wash my baby's cardigan before they wear it?

Yes, it's a good idea to wash the whole layette before first use. Use a cold, delicate cycle without tumble drying, with a gentle detergent, and follow the care label on each garment. Air-dry it in the shade.

What newborn gift includes a cardigan?

A knitted cardigan with a sleepsuit or matching accessories makes a lovely, complete gift. Choose size 3-6 months if you'd like them to wear it once they've already been given lots of tiny clothes.

What newborn jackets does tuc tuc have?

tuc tuc has knitted cardigans with raised details, fruit appliqués, embroidered strawberries or flowers, and a hooded denim jacket. All comply with the European REACH regulation. See the full newborn range.
